Abstract

It is well known that semiconductor laser amplifiers (SLAs) can be used as modulators and detectors.1-4 For network use, in-line SLAs that act not only as linear amplifiers for the whole optica) carrier but also as transmitters and receivers simultaneously for select channels are particularly desirable. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of using neartraveling-wave (NTW) SLAs to simultaneously transmit and receive higher-band frequency-shift-keying (FSK) channels while amplifying a 622-Mbit/s baseband channel The carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) performance of the three channels is presented.
