Photo-induced second-harmonic generation: observation of charge separation from the photovoltaic effect

Abstract

One of the basic differences between orientational and charge separation (due to photo-voltaic effect or diffusion) models of photo-induced second-harmonic generation (SHG) consists in the essential role of boundary (e.g., the illuminated region) for macroscopic charge separation. Therefore, the mechanism of the effect can be ascertained with an experiment, which can reveal this role.
