Phase manipulation with nonlinear metasurfaces

Abstract

Optical metasurfaces provide an easy and flexible way of realizing flat and ultrathin optical components like lenses, beamsplitters or even complex holograms [1]. One example is dual-polarity metalens that acts either as convex or concave lenses depending on the used circular polarization state of light [2]. Recently, the concept of phase altering metasurfaces was extended to the nonlinear regime by demonstrating the focusing for the generated four-wave mixing and third-harmonic signal generated directly from the metalens [3,4]. By utilizing the high nonlinearity of plasmonic nanoantennas (meta-atoms) and the concept of the Pancharatnam-Berry phase for polarization state conversion, we designed and realized nonlinear holographic metasurfaces that act as a nonlinear imaging element.
