Abstract

Microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) are excellent hosts for being infiltrated with organic or inorganic materials that can alter their guiding properties and enhance their functionalities. Wet phase infiltration of MOFs has been widely employed for the creation of tuneable devices [1] and the alteration of their guiding mechanism [2]. Recently, it was demonstrated that infiltration with a high dispersion material, namely 2-methyl 4-nitroaniline (MNA) can lead to the creation of a dual guidance mechanism microstructured optical fiber; such a type of optical fiber also exhibits second harmonic generation upon 1064nm excitation [3]. However, in order to maximize SHG output and pave the way towards practical applications of those optical fibers, control of the MNA crystallization inside the MOF capillaries is required, so that phase matching conditions can be met which would lead to a manifold increase of the SHG signal. As crystallization during fabrication can only be partially controlled, post processing by means of electrical poling at elevated temperatures is proposed.
