Abstract

Neodymium (Nd3+) ion has been known as a potential rare-earth ion for optical fiber amplifiers operating near the 1.3-μm spectral region due to its 4F3/24I13/2 transition [1, 2]. However, the use of the 1.33-μm emission from Nd3+ ions has faced a major problem due to the existence of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) at 1.06 μm due to the 4F3/24I11/2 transition whose branching ratio is about 5 times larger. Recently, an all-solid photonic bandgap fiber (ASPBF) was demonstrated with prohibited transmission bands of the propagated light. The control of photonic bandgap (PB) enables a variety of applications ranging from tunable bandpass filters to nonlinear optical devices [3]. In addition, ASPBFs are easier to be fabricated and have higher mechanical stability due to the absence of air-hole structures as compared to conventional holey photonic bandgap fibers. Therefore, we propose in this work tellurite ASPBFs with double cladding to suppress the 1.06-μm ASE of Nd3+ ions when they are excited by the pump around 0.8 μm.
