Abstract

High energy ultrashort pulses in the midwave infrared (MWIR), i.e., at wavelengths longer than 4 µm, are of great interest for a range of applications in strong field physics like high harmonic and x-ray generation. The most established method to generate ultrashort MWIR pulses is optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) using non-oxide crystals, like ZGP or CSP [1]. The latter require a 2-µm pump source which is a key element of such systems. Only a small number of few-cycle MWIR OPCPAs with kHz repetition rates have been reported, typically generating pulse energies in the few-10 µJ range [2,3]. Recently, we demonstrated a sub-100 fs high energy OPCPA delivering 1.0 mJ, 5.1 µm pulses at a vrep=1 kHz repetition rate [4]. Here, we report new results towards scaling the 5-µm OPCPA system to several 10 GW peak power at vrep=1 kHz.
