Exploiting the optical reflection matrix for OCT signal enhancement

Abstract

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has become a major tool for medical imaging due to it’s capability to quickly capture volumetric images with microscopic resolution non-invasively. Strong scattering in thick tissue such as human skin limits the achievable imaging depth typically to the range of 1-3 mm in such samples and, hence, to date OCT is lacking a significant impact on clinical disciplines such as dermatology despite it’s strong potential for diagnostics.
