Laser induced thermomechanical cracking for fatigue life determination of coated steel

Abstract

A pulsed Yb fiber laser was used to irradiate steel coated with chromium to induce thermomechanical cracks; the resultant part showed a reduced fatigue life. This provides a path to accelerated fatigue tests.
