Detection of pulsed amplitude- and phase-modulated signals

Abstract

We review the detection of pulsed optical data formats, focusing on on/off keying (OOK) and differential phase shift keying (DPSK). We point out the benefits of pulsed signal reception, and explain why balanced rather than single-ended detection should be used for DPSK.
