Controlling the propagation of optical beams in photonic crystals

Abstract

The anomalous dispersion of photonic crystals (PCs) has brought a range of possible applications in addition to their well-known photonic bandgap (PBG) applications. Unlike the PBG-based applications where the bandgap frequencies (and possibly defect modes in those regions) are involved, the primary physical mechanism of interest outside the PBG is propagation of waves inside the PC. To design novel optical devices using anomalous dispersion of PCs, we need to monitor the optical beam while it is propagating through the PC.
