Buried silver ion-exchanged glass waveguides with very low birefringence

Abstract

Buried glass waveguides by molten salt and silver film ion exchange have been fabricated and their birefringence has been measured by two separate techniques. The measured birefringence is very low with a broad range of waveguide widths and no significant difference in birefringence due to the fabrication technique was observed.
