Abstract
We show that the formation of discrete solitons in arrays of coupled waveguides or cavities in photonic crystals is the result of the interplay between the peculiar discrete diffraction and nonlinear phase modulation. Various types of discrete solitons, their properties and stability behavior are discussed.
