Optical Tweezers Measure Forces in a Single Biopolymer Molecule

Abstract

Microscopic dielectric beads are trapped at a laser beam focus. These beads are then used as handles to mechanically stress single biopolymer molecules and measure their response. Properties such as entropic elasticity, alternate structural states and unfolding/refolding kinetic are observed in single molecules of DNA, RNA or protein.
