Abstract
Electromagnetic interaction at subwavelength distances is now opening new paths to nanometric optical science and technology and has applications ranging from characterization to fabrication and manipulation. Exploiting concepts of statistical optics in conjuncture with miniaturized devices will lead to the development of a new generation of optical sensors.
