Transmitter / Receiver Performance Under Polarization Mode Dispersion Stress

Abstract

A programmable polarization mode dispersion source is used to characterize the performance of transmitter / receiver pairs before their deployment onto a fiber-optic link. Combination of measured performance with numerically generated probability distributions proves a method to estimate the outage probability of a system.
