Abstract

One can create gratings and lenses in planar lightwave circuits with arrays of side-by-side waveguides. The most well-known such device is the waveguide grating demultiplexer (also called PHASAR or arrayed-waveguide grating). We will discuss other arrayed-waveguide devices, such as optical add drops, gain equalizers, and tunable dispersion compensators, as well.
