Abstract

We discuss the origin of spectral modal noise in a fiber-coupled echelle spectrograph for astronomical applications. Computer simulation is used to show how the interference of optical modes in a multi-mode optical fiber leads to a periodic variation in transmission spectra, as observed experimentally.
