This paper reports recent progress of semiconductor optical amplifiers with quantum-dot active layers for photonic networks. We focus on their operation principles based on unique properties of quantum dots, high-power and broadband amplification at around the wavelength of 1.5 µm, and high-speed wavelength conversion up to 160 Gb/s by the cross-gain modulation and four-wave mixing.
