Photonic bandgap fibers which guide light in a hollow core are becoming directly competitive with conventional single-mode fibers for some applications. They have very low nonlinearity, unusual dispersion and a high damage threshold. We describe the current status of research into their properties, and their prospects for laser beam delivery.
