Abstract
The use of submicrometer Silicon-On-Insulator rib waveguides for optical on-chip communications is described. This option offers many advantages, including low loss waveguides, efficient and compact 90°-tums and beam splitters. Allowing chip-scale light distribution from one point to several tens, it is also naturally adapted to the integration of silicon-compatible optoelectronics.
