Abstract

The fiber or waveguide coupling efficiency of a packaged semiconductor optical amplifier can be quantified using thermal profiling in conjunction with a finite element total energy balance model. This technique does not rely on characterization prior to packaging, and is also appropriate for amplifiers integrated in photonic circuits.
