Abstract

An optical vortex coronagraph, constructed by replacing the traditional coronagraph occulter with a vortex mask, creates a dark central null in a star allowing nearby planets to be detected. A vortex coronagraph may hold several advantages over other coronagraphs such as lower aberration sensitivity and multi-wavelength operation.
