Dynamics of Passive Mode-locking Instability Caused by Inhomogeneous Gain Saturation

Abstract

A new type of instability occurs in passively mode-locked inhomogeneously broadened lasers when the group velocity dispersion becomes large and pulse bandwidth becomes narrow. The gain-loss balance in the frequency domain determines detailed dynamics.
