Ultrafast Spin-dependent Carrier Dynamics in Ferromagnetic Thin Films

Abstract

Spin-dependent carrier dynamics in ferromagnetic thin films is studied by time-, energy-, angle-, and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. We show that spin-wave emission occurs on the femtosecond timescale and contributes significantly to the inelastic decay of optically excited carriers in iron while electron-magnon coupling is weak in cobalt. Employing magnetic dichroism in time-resolved photoemission we identify spin-orbit hybridization points in the band structure of cobalt which can serve as spin hot spots in ultrafast demagnetization. In contrast to the ultrafast spin dynamics and femtomagnetism in itinerant ferromagnets the magnetization dynamics in Gadolinium occurs on picosecond timescales
