Mid-IR nonlinear integrated silicon photonics

Abstract

This tutorial will focus on the emerging technology area of nonlinear mid-IR Si photonics. This area offers many technical surprises and possibilities. Nonlinear optical waveguide phenomena have only recently been investigated for the standard telecommunications wavelength. This work has shown that the nonlinear propagation of the optical wave in Si wire waveguides allows them to be considered as a “Fiber on Chip”, that is their nonlinear functionality is close to that of an optical fiber but with microscopic dimensions and length-scales. Thus, central nonlinear effects such as pulse shortening, soliton generation, four-wave-mixing, and cross- or self-phase modulation have now been demonstrated in a fully integrated Si chip format and shown that they can be used for a series of important applications in high-speed measurements and data communications.
