Enhanced Brillouin scattering in silica via saturable phonon losses

Abstract

Acoustic dissipation in silica is dominated by defects that act as saturable absorbers at cryogenic temperatures. Using stimulated Brillouin spectroscopy we demonstrate that this loss channel can be mitigated in fiber, enhancing Brillouin gain.
