Compact High Precision Optical Reference Based on Trapped Ions

Abstract

Using optical, ultra-narrow transitions in trapped ions, we develop a highly accurate, compact optical reference with a fractional frequency uncertainty of less than 10−15. With a rugged and compact design, the system will be truly portable.
