A Diode Made of Light – Optical Isolators and Circulators Based on the Intrinsic Nonreciprocity of the Kerr Effect

Abstract

We demonstrate optical nonreciprocity based on Kerr interaction of counterpropagating light in whispering gallery microresonators. This effect is used to realize compact optical isolators and circulators with >20 dB isolation.
