Coupled-Core Fibers: Where Mode Scrambling Mitigates Nonlinear Effects

Abstract

In coupled-core multicore fibers the light guided by the cores is continuously scrambled across all cores. The scrambling can be undone using multiple-input-multiple-output digital signal processing, and a beneficial reduction of nonlinear impairments is observed compared to single-mode fiber transmission.
