Abstract

Previous work on soda-lime-silica glass,1 fused silica,2,3 ’’ fused silica fibers,4 and polymer-coated optical fibers5 indicates the dependence of strength and fatigue (crack- growth) characteristics on the pH of the surrounding environment. This paper considers the effect of aging polymer-coated fused- silica optical-fiber specimens in solutions of pH from 0 to 13 on the strength. (The ultraviolet-curable coating was supplied by Borden Industries.).
