Control of substrate tube diameter during MCVD preform preparation

Abstract

A frequent problem during fabrication of optical fiber preforms is the premature collapse of the fused-quartz substrate tube. This is a particularly serious problem during fabrication of single-mode fibers requiring a thick cladding. When the cladding is undoped fused silica, these layers must be deposited at sufficiently high temperatures that the substrate tube softens and collapses. Figure 1 illustrates this problem. Without any corrective action, the tube outer diameter decreases with each pass of the hot zone and the tube interior becomes clogged during the sixth cladding-layer deposition.
