Abstract
Static-fatigue resistance of optical fibers is important for long-term mechanical stability. High-silica fibers have intrinsically high tensile strength, >1000 ksi, but must be protected with an abrasion-resistant coating to preserve their strength. Fibers coated with silicone or other organic polymers do indeed exhibit initial strengths in the laboratory, > 500 ksi in 1-km gauge lengths.1
