Abstract
There is a need for inexpensive optical signal splitters for use in the optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR)1 and for other applications. When used in the OTDR, these splitters couple incident laser pulses into a fiber and separate out reflected signals into a detector. Several such splitters have been reported,2–4 but in general there is room for improvement in terms of both loss and cost of fabrication.
