Strength characterization of multikilometer silica fibers

Abstract

Because of more stringent strength requirements and longer fiber lengths needed for undersea cable fibers,1 a program was undertaken to establish a data base and probable yield for long-length high- strength proof-testing. While the use of careful handling and improved processing techniques developed in earlier strength studies2 generally leads to acceptable fiber strengths, sporadic fiber failures traced to zirconia particles from the draw furnace may impact to a greater degree on the very long lengths needed for undersea cable fibers. Particular attention in this work was directed to the effects of furnace degradation and the effectiveness of convection through the furnace in sweeping out harmful particles.
