Abstract

Laser amplifiers could be very attractive for long distance single-mode fiber communication systems, particularly with FSK or PSK heterodyne-type links,1 because such devices can easily transmit phase or frequency information. Theoretical calculations (Ref. 2 and references therein) have stressed the possibility of using laser amplifiers in PCM-IM optical transmission systems. Recently3 an experimental demonstration of receiver sensitivity improvement by a laser diode preamplifier has been reported. Here we show that the length of a laboratory simulated link can be significantly increased with an on-line laser amplifier.
