Abstract
A 1-GHz bandwidth analog fiber-optic link has been designed, characterized, and recently delivered to Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. The link is comprised of a semiconductor laser transmitter, a 1-km section of graded-index multimode fiber, and a photodiode-amplifier receiver. The spurious-free dynamic range of link operated with 2 m of fiber between the laser and detector is 40 dB. With the 1-km fiber inserted between the laser and detector, modal interference effects create excess harmonic distortion.1,2 The spurious-free dynamic range of the 1-km link is 30 dB due to the excess modal harmonics and the attenuation of the fiber (~3 dB/km).
