Abstract

We have studied the various photodetector/amplifier options for long-wavelength system applications both in terms of present practical device options and potential performance. In this paper we present experimental results and theoretical limits for the most promising photodetector/amplifier combinations as well as new structures with the potential for improved performance. Criteria for the selection of the optimum devices for a wide range of bit rates are discussed. Figure 1 illustrates the performance achievable with the most promising photodetector/amplifier combinations based on experimental device parameters.
