Abstract
In the last year or two there has been spectacular progress in developments relating to single-mode fibers. In terms of fabrication it is now possible to achieve continuously drawn lengths1 of 100 km having losses of only a few tenths of a dB/km. The conditions under which bend and microbend losses can be minimized have been indicated by various analyses2 and have been realized in practice so that experimental transmissions over 100 km have been reported.3
