Design and fabrication of monomode fibers for long-wavelength operation

Abstract

We have previously reported a technique which enabled low OH content, low-loss conventional monomode fibers to be produced in long lengths. 1,2 Dispersion shifted fiber requires a higher core Ge level, and previously reported fibers of this latter type have suffered from excessive attenuation.3,4 We have examined the relationship between Ge concentration and attenuation, together with the fabrication technique, to minimize the excess loss. We describe four types of monomode fiber design and assess the potential for practical application, important new aspects will be discussed in detail at the conference, but otherwise the basic fiber fabrication was as previously reported using P2O5/F/SiO2 cladding and GeO2/SiO2 core.1,2 The loss spectra of the fibers described in Table I are shown in Fig.1.
