Abstract

By employing the unique properties of optical fibers such as small size, lightweight, high tensile strength, wide bandwidth, and low transmission loss, pictures from an imaging seeker in a guided missile can be transmitted to an operator on the ground white target-tracking commands are being transmitted back to the missile. The advantages of such a missile system include: reduced launcher vulnerability; increased target vulnerability; reduced missile cost with sophisticated video processing/ tracking located in the launcher; and provision of a secure link that cannot be jammed.
