Design and fabrication of fusion-type optical-fiber couplers

Abstract

Despite published experimental results,1,2 no comprehensive study of the fusion-type coupler has been reported. In this paper we present an analytic model illustrating the operation of a fusion-type multimode fiber directional coupler. The model quantifies the coupling mechanism and coupler characteristics. The important design and fabrication considerations for low-loss couplers are pointed out.
