Abstract

We have combined the technique of laser annealing of glass thin-film optical waveguides with the deposition of a nearly index-matched film on the waveguide surface to obtain waveguides having extremely low values of loss. Using these techniques we have measured waveguide attenuation coefficients as low as 0.01 dB/cm. This value is nearly 2 orders of magnitude lower than values previously reported for thin-film glass waveguides.1,2
