Abstract
The evolution of fiber technology in the past five years has led to a more detailed understanding and measurability of multimode optical fiber parameters through consideration of factors that include material and waveguide dispersion and modal distortion, differential mode attenuation, input modal excitation, and leaky modes.1 Moreover experimentation and analysis related to systems of concatenated fibers have introduced concerns for the effects brought about by slight differences that normally might exist in the respective parameters and propagation characteristics for each fiber.2 It also has been pointed out recently that the joint in the concatenated system can profoundly affect the system performance in terms of both attenuation and bandwidth.3,4
