Low-reflectance fiber-optic terminations and connections

Abstract

The prospect of communicating both ways on a single optical fiber waveguide is attractive for several reasons: (1) lower cost of fiber cable; (2) ease of deployment and retrieval for portable systems; and (3) doubling of traffic capacity on existing links. One method of doing this at a single optical wavelength is shown in Fig. 1. However, reflections from the flat-end connections and terminations in the Sink can reduce the signal to interference ratio (S/I) to <1.1
