Abstract

Progress in fabrication of a larger preform size (>2 cm in diameter) with various techniques such as VAD or LMCVD1,2 will necessitate high-speed drawing and coating of optical fibers. To this end, there are three crucial items required to be investigated separately3,4: (1) control of fiber temperature entering a coating cup; (2) minimizing shear occurring inside a coating applicator: and (3) a curing system which is capable of delivering sufficient energy for a coating material applied at high speed.
