Abstract

Optical waveguide technology is playing an ever expanding role in telecommunication networks and has reached the production phase in a very short time. Optical fiber systems have proved cost-effective and reliable. Large repeater spacings, particularly in the telephone network, provide a key advantage of fiber-optic systems over competing transmission technologies. Fiber-optic systems operating ~1300 nm are capable of achieving significantly larger repeater spacings than systems operating in the near-IR wavelength range between 800 and 900 nm.
