100-Mbit/sec 15-km transmission experiment using a 1.3-μm LED

Abstract

LEDs are attractive optical sources not only for low bit rate-short span fiber communication systems but also for high bit rate-long span systems1 due to preferable characteristics, such as high reliability, high stability, and low cost, compared with laser diodes. This paper presents 100-Mbit/sec long span transmission experiments utilizing a newly developed high speed LED at ~1.3-μm wavelength and a high efficiency LED-to-fiber coupling circuit. Low-loss graded-index fibers and a Ge APD were used as a transmission line and a detector, respectively.
