Abstract
The decrease of bandwidth with length is an important consideration in the design of an optical communication system. In modern low-loss fibers where mode-coupling effects are necessarily small, this characteristic is thus principally controlled by the refractive-index profile. The jointing of fibers of dissimilar profiles leads to compensation effects which have been studied.1-3 A system of fibers of similar profiles can also show versatile behavior depending on the nature of the residual perturbations from a perfect a profile4 and the difference between source and peak (optimal) wavelength λp.
