Abstract

Fiber-optic interferometers have been intensively investigated for sensing a variety of environmental parameters such as sound, acceleration, temperature, and magnetic field. To achieve linearity and maximum sensitivity in homodyne interferometer sensors, it is necessary to maintain phase quadrature between the signal and reference legs of the interferometer. We have developed a passive scheme to simulate the required phase quadrature in an approach, which we call passive quadrature demodulation (PQD). The advantage of the PQD is that it eliminates the piezoelectric phase stretcher and associated electronics traditionally used in homodyne feedback systems.1,2 We have achieved excellent performance with this passive demodulation technique, including detection of phase shifts of 2 X 10-6 rad/√Hz and operation, which is in- sensitive to temperature and polarization effects.
