Abstract

Discussed will be the fundamental principles of operation, materials, and operational and reliability characteristics of laser and LED light sources and PIN and avalanche photodiode light detectors for fiber optics. The tutorial will include, but not be limited to, such diverse subjects as laser modes, laser self-sustained oscillation, detector and emitter speed, and lognormal reliability statistics. Physical origin, rather than mathematical interpretation, of phenomena will be emphasized.
